This is a special report from a birthing suite at Tacoma General Hospital.
Sources say Kathleen Cooper George went into labor at 1:15 a.m. Sunday. She woke her husband at 1:50 a.m. with the news. After four contractions in 15 minutes, they headed for the hospital. In what might be a coincidence, police report seeing a gray Acura doing 75 mph on Highway 16. They couldn't catch him.
Witnesses report seeing a groggy Kathleen and groggier Hunter roaming the halls for over an hour in an effort to get the labor moving. At her 3 a.m. check-in, she was 3 cm. By the time she calmly but firmly called for an epidural, it was 7:30 a.m. and she was at 4 cm. She stayed there for hours. And hours.
She got to 5 cm around 2 or 3 pm (the main source for this story was losing track of time). In the meantime, two good friends, Marce and Lisa, made separate visits to help keep Kathleen's spirits up, and to let Hunter go get something to eat. A cafeteria worker says he nearly annihilated the breakfast bar.
There was a minor disturbance on the second floor of TG's birthing unit today when a pregnant woman reported that her epidural had stopped working and someone better find the @$#@% epi doctor and give her another %$@^#% epi. Dr. Jason arrived and saved the day. It was unclear if this was related to the George pregnancy, but sources indicated the yelling was coming from that corner of the unit.
At 5 pm, two doctors did an examination and reported that Kathleen was at 9.5 cm. "It's about #@$%#$ time," she replied with good humor. The docs said it wouldn't be too much longer.
That's all we've got from the scene. Remember, when news breaks, we'll fix it.
Stay tuned for more.
