A moody medical update

In a moment of sheer stupidity, I scheduled an OB appointment for the morning after Election Day. And because OB appointments are impossible get unless you schedule them before you are pregnant, I had to keep it.

So I dragged myself to the office for the glucose test, which is a ridiculous procedure in which they make you drink 12 ounces of highly sweetened carbonated beverage in five minutes and then draw your blood an hour later. I thought a lot about cave women and how I'm pretty sure they didn't have to worry about glucose testing. Out-running the saber-toothed tiger probably was enough.

I don't like carbonated stuff. I don't drink Cokes or any other soda pop. My beverages of choice are coffee, water, milk, orange juice and martinis. So by the time my blood was drawn I felt murderous because I was tired and nauseated from slamming 12 ounces of lime-flavored carbonated nastiness then waiting two hours past my appointment time to see my obstetrician.

(Hunter usually comes with me to these appointments, but he was lucky to miss this one because my mood was a treat. Instead he went into the office to keep covering the election. I'm not sure he and I have said any sentences to each other in the past week that didn't contain the words "election," "race," "governor," "president," or "exhaustion.")

Once I did see the doctor, we listened to the LG's heartbeat and watched him or her swim around, which was very entertaining. She told me I was measuring at 30 weeks, even though I'm at 28.5, and that I've gained 17 pounds. All signs are that I'm having a great pregnancy.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned here that I have to pee in a cup before every OB appointment. But being over-informed helps explain this next part.

After my appointment the nurse called to say my most recent iron levels are low and that I need to take a supplement beyond the prenatal vitamin. This is common in the last half of pregnancy, and it explained some of the tiredness I suddenly felt even before the election. She warned me of some unpleasant side effects of taking extra iron, and encouraged me to eat a lot of extra fiber.

The LG better be one cute baby.

Been there, done that. I was a little anemic too so I had to take iron supplements. Since we're oversharing, a little advice...start taking a stool softner now. Trust me. You'll have lots more energy but your eyes will fill up with poop. (nice visual)

Hopefully you won't be like me and fail your test. They said I could eat whatever I wanted the morning of it but just not too much carb or sugar. Um, hello? How much is too much? Obviously my bagel was so I had to go back for the 3-hr test. That one royally sucks!

Give the LG bump a rub for me.
